Bilik dan Kurung Hayam









Two of the Batik Garutan patterns are kurung hayam and bilik. If you are Sundanese, you may know that Sundanese traditional humble house is made from bilik, which is a plaited bamboo.

As for “kurung hayam” or henhouse, it is bamboo specifically for keeping a chicken. This henhouse can only keep a few chickens. Sundanese are really keen on breeding chickens because of their eggs and meat. Furthermore, chicken can wake them up in the morning, organic alarm clocks!

Batik garutan craftsmen has been inspired by these bilik and kurung hayam that they see in their daily life; furthermore these patterns are still exist up to now. It’s so humble and traditional.

Batik Garutan


Batik Garutan is a culture's heritage that raised from the old generation and has developed long before the time of independence. Batik Garutan reached its popularity in between 1967 sd 1985, but then developments of the production has been decreased due to the rapid printing batik industries, lack of interest in the next generation, unavailability of materials and capital, and poor marketing strategies.

Batik fabric is not only commonly used for "Sinjang", but also clothes and more.
The Pattern of Batik Garutan forms a reflection of social and cultural life, philosophy of life, and customs of the Sundanese. Some embodiments of Batik Garutan can be described visually through the motif and color.

Based on the rationale behind the creation of
Batik Garutan, the patterns are presented as geometric shape characteristic variety of dressing. Other forms of Batik Garutan motifs are flora and fauna. The basic geometrical shape leads to a geometric line forming diagonal and "kawung" pattern or rhombus with a beige color combined with other bright colors as the most dominant colors.
