Two of the Batik Garutan patterns
are kurung hayam and bilik. If you are Sundanese, you may know that Sundanese traditional
humble house is made from bilik, which is a plaited bamboo.
As for “kurung hayam” or henhouse,
it is bamboo specifically for keeping a chicken. This henhouse can only keep a
few chickens. Sundanese are really keen on breeding chickens because of their
eggs and meat. Furthermore, chicken can wake them up in the morning, organic
alarm clocks!
Batik garutan craftsmen has been
inspired by these bilik and kurung hayam that they see in their daily life;
furthermore these patterns are still exist up to now. It’s so humble and
